Josef Steindl Furniture design. ca. 1888-1928.

Collection of 315 original drawings and 571 photographic prints of furniture designs by Josef Steindl, many in historical styles of the 1890s. Steindl also designed modern pieces for the bentwood, metal and tubular steel furniture industry of Moravia. Many of these designs were manufactured by leading furniture factories in Vienna such as the firms of Gebrüder Thonet, and Jacob and Josef Kohn. The wide variety of furniture includes chairs, armchairs, benches, sofas, loveseats, tables, vitrines, cupboards, sideboards, wardrobes and beds. Also represented are decorative objects including clocks, mirrors, frames and music stands. Depicted as well are living room and bedroom ensembles, garden furniture, interior views of restaurants and cafés, the hunting lodge, Jagdhaus Barwinck, and house floor plans. In the series of miscellaneous items there are photographs of a groundplan and elevation for a trade school; some portrait photographs, one possibly of Thonet and Steindl; and drawings for a design of a garden and monument.

Steindl, architect and professor at the Royal Technical School for Woodworking in Wal. Mesertitsch, was a noted designer of modern, functional furniture in the 20th century. He designed primarily bentwood and metal tubular furniture. He was, however, also a master of historical furniture styles as seen in his work of the 1880s and 1890s and in the ornamentation for his bentwood pieces.
